Hold Your Water

Laurel for the Patuxent, Inc. (L4P) is committed to being an effective partner with all organizations, private and governmental, that seek to make positive impacts on the environment in and around the City of Laurel.

To that end, L4P has partnered with the City on multiple initiatives. Most recently, Mike McLaughlin is representing L4P on the City’s Program for Public Information (PPI) Committee, which was created as part of the National Flood Insurance Program Community Rating System to raise awareness of flooding risks in the Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA) within the City.

Inspired by the Anacostia Watershed Society, one of L4P’s proposals to the PPI committee was to post signs at road crossings of creeks and streams to identify waterways that feed into the Patuxent River.

These road signs are part of a larger effort called, “Hold Your Water” designed to engage all city residents, not just those in the SFHAs, in efforts to reduce the amount of stormwater runoff that contributes to both flood hazard and pollution of the Patuxent River.

Laurel Mayor Craig Moe gave the green light to a “Hold Your Water” campaign, and the PPI Committee asked for samples of possible signage, the first drafts of which are below.
